Building Raised Vegetable Beds

To build the raised beds, I bought three 2"x12"x 12' boards made from YellaWood preserved lumber. Using a circular saw, I cut one board into three 35 1/2" lengths and used two of those for the box ends. The two sides are made using the other 12' boards. This creates a raised box 12' long by 3' wide.

The wood is then laid out, holes are pre-drilled in the side pieces using a cordless drill and a 1/8" drill bit.

Next, using 3-inch decking screws, I attached one of the sides to an end board. Then, another end piece is attached to that. Finally the second side is screwed to each end unit. I used a framing square to keep the box square as I was assembling it.

Now with the box in position, I found it necessary to use a level to make sure the box was level on the ground. Since there is uneven soil under the beds, I used spare pieces of wood or bricks to place under the sides to make the box level. Once in position, I used 18-inch wooden stakes to keep the raised bed in place. Driving the stakes into the ground until they were even with the top of the sides I attached the stakes to the bed by using 2" inch screws. This will keep the beds in place.

Composter Is Working Great!

The first bin of the composter had been filled repeatedly for the past couple of months. This material started decomposing very rapidly and reduced its size as in compacted and compressed. When the first bin had compressed as far as it would go, we turned it over into the second bin with a large pitchfork and a smaller garden fork. We immediately began to fill the first bin again. This can be seen in the photos as a partially filled first bin.

When the second bin filled and compressed its contents, we transfered it to the third bin. By this time the organic material had decomposed to a thick, dark, soil like matter. We let it sit there in the third bin until we were ready to use it in the garden. In the photo above, you can see the ready to use compost in the third bin, the second bin about 90% finished and the first bin being filled again.

The photo above and below show the first batch of compost ready to use in the new raised vegetable garden boxes.
